Minister D Krishna Das opens onion sale counter at Rythu Bazaar in Srikakulam

Srikakulam: The State government is committed to check price rise of all essential commodities in the State, said Minister for Roads and Buildings D Krishna Das here on Sunday.

He was inaugurating onion counter at Kotabommali Rythu Bazaar under Tekkali Assembly segment. Onions are sold at the rate of Rs 25 a kg. All white cardholders are eligible to secure onions on subsidy.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister explained that in the open market price, the onion is sold at Rs 90 a kg. The government has decided to sell onion at subsidy to give relief to common people. Onion scarcity arose due to damage of crop in the State and the produce is being procurred from Maharashtra, he explained.

The State government is procuring onion at the rate of Rs 65 a KG and selling it at subsidy, he said. Joint Collector K Srinivasulu explained that at present onion is sold on subsidy at Rythu Bazaars in Srikakulam, Amudalavalasa and Kotabommali.

He directed Marketing and Civil Supplies officials to open more sale counters. The district administration procured 10 tonnes of onion, he said. The administration would procure additional quantity of onion, if need arose. Assistant Director for Marketing B Srinivasa Rao and officials attended.
