CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy urged to clarify on construction of steel plant in Kadapa

Kadapa: Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee working president N Tulasi Reddy has demanded that Chief Minister clarify during his two-day visit to Kadapa district the government's stand on establishment of steel plant. Speaking to media persons at Vempalle on Sunday, the APCC leader pointed out that the establishment of steel plant remained a dream though top leaders represented Rayalaseema region. He recalled that the steel plant was first proposed by late Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy and he laid foundation for Brahmani Steels at Ambavaram village of Jammalamadugu mandal. He said it was abandoned due to various reasons.

He said that establishment of steel plant by Steel Authority of India was clearly mentioned in AP Reorganisation Act but failed to materialise. The BJP-lead NDA government did not evince any interest in it.

In 2018, former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu laid foundation for Rayalaseema Steels at Kambaladinne village under Mylavaram mandal. He said later the TDP had lost the election. The then government did not spend even single rupee on it.

Finally, on December 23 last year, Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy had laid foundation for steel plant at Sunnapurallapalle village in Jammalamadugu mandal.

It is proposed to be established with an annual production of 3 lakh tonnes by investing Rs 15,000 crores. It has employment opportunities for 25,000 people. He said despite Rs 250 crore being allocated in both in 2019-20, 2020-21 budgets, not a single pie was spent on the proposed unit. Other Congress leaders were present at the media conference.
