iPhone 18 Pro users face a new issue: Face ID failures and unexpected restarts

Apple's new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are now being delivered to customers; however, some early buyers are saying there are issues with one of the devices main security features. Face ID authentication is not working properly for users and information suggests that the problem can happen when doing certain tasks on the phone.

In some cases, trying to use Face ID makes the iPhone freeze before it restarts. Goes back to the lock screen. We do not know how many people have this problem and it does not seem to happen to every iPhone 18 Pro owner. Still many people say they have Face ID problems with Apple’s newest Pro models.

Face ID fails during certain actions

The Face ID problem does not seem to happen in one situation. According to MacRumors, a Reddit user-whose post was seen by 9to5Mac-said that authentication can fail when trying to unlock an app. In these cases, the iPhone 18 Pro may stop working and restart sending the user back to the Face ID lock screen.

Similar complaints have come up on the MacRumors forum. Some iPhone 18 Pro users said they saw a "Face ID Not" message while trying to set up the feature. Others pointed out that the phone sometimes ignores the "Require Attention, for Face ID" setting even when it is turned on.

Change in Face ID hardware

Reports say that Apple has changed the Face ID equipment in its Pro phones. The infrared camera is now under the screen near the left part; this change helps Apple make the Dynamic Island smaller. It is not clear if this equipment change is connected to the reported problems with checking identity. The problems could also be from software and MacRumors says Apple might fix the Face ID problems, in an iOS 27 update.

When it comes to users there is no sign that this problem hits every iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max unit. Far complaints have come from only a few users so the problem remains unclear in scope.
