Bihar Minister Shreyasi Singh’s ‘Decent, Elegant’ Moral Policing Remark Sparks Row

Bihar Minister and Jamui MLA Shreyasi Singh has triggered a political controversy after her remarks on the alleged harassment of two Class 10 students in Jamui, where she said that “moral policing can be done in a more decent and elegant fashion.”

Singh made the comments while speaking to India Today TV about a viral video showing a group of people allegedly confronting and harassing a teenage boy and girl in her constituency. She condemned the manner in which the minors were treated and said such behaviour was “absolutely not tolerable.”

Shreyasi Singh Clarifies Her Remarks

While discussing the incident, Singh said people could have their own opinions about how others choose to live. However, she maintained that such views could be expressed in a different manner.

“The way they have treated them is absolutely not tolerable,” Singh said, referring to the treatment of the two minors. She also described the videos that emerged from the incident as shocking.

The minister questioned how members of the local community could treat two children in such a manner and said she would work to ensure that those responsible faced accountability.

Jamui Case Sparks Political Reactions

Singh’s comments have drawn criticism from opposition leaders and political parties.

Congress leader Pawan Khera questioned the reference to “decent and elegant” moral policing in a post on X, arguing that intrusion into an individual's life does not become acceptable merely because it is carried out in a supposedly restrained manner.

Congress leader Supriya Shrinate also criticised Singh’s statement, saying she was stunned by the remarks.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accused the Jamui MLA of appearing to justify moral policing in connection with the incident. These were political responses to Singh’s remarks and do not establish any finding regarding her intent.

Opposition Raises Law And Order Concerns

Janshakti Janta Dal chief Tej Pratap Yadav also criticised the Bihar government while commenting on the Jamui incident.

Yadav said the incident involving the two teenagers concerned their personal choices and questioned the broader issue of safety in Bihar.

The political reactions come as the alleged harassment case has become a major issue following the circulation of the video on social media.

Police Arrest Main Accused

Meanwhile, police action in the Jamui case has intensified.

Nandan Yadav, identified by police as a key accused, was arrested after an encounter during a police operation. He sustained a leg injury and was taken to hospital for treatment, according to reports. Another accused, Hare Ram Yadav, was also arrested after being injured during the police action.

Police have been identifying suspects from the video and conducting searches for others allegedly involved in the incident. An FIR has been registered under relevant provisions, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Police Take Action Over Viral Video

Authorities have also taken action against social media accounts that circulated footage identifying the minor victim.

Bihar Police have registered cases against numerous social media profile holders over the circulation of the video and warned people against sharing or reposting material that reveals the identity of a minor victim.

An SIT has also been formed to investigate the incident and identify those allegedly involved.

The investigation into the incident and the actions of the accused remains ongoing.
