Flydubai Flight FZ1073 Diverted To Saudi Arabia After Pilot Altercation, Passengers Safe

A flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was diverted to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after an in-flight incident triggered emergency alerts and a major security response.

Boeing 737 flight FZ1073, which was en route to Israel, had sent out an emergency transponder signal, which included one code that could be linked with possible illegal interference. Authorities were assessing the situation while Israeli fighter jets were scrambled.

Later, the plane turned and safely made its descent to Tabuk airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia. All passengers were safe and accounted for, said Flydubai.

Emergency Signals Trigger Security Alert

According to flight-tracking data, FZ1073 first transmitted squawk code 7700, which indicates a general emergency, before switching to 7500, the internationally recognised code for unlawful interference.

The 7500 signal prompted concerns that the aircraft could have been hijacked and led to an immediate security response in Israel.

However, an Israeli Prime Minister’s Office spokesperson later said the incident was not believed to be a hijacking and described it as a different type of incident.

Reports Point To Fight Between Pilots

An Israeli official told Reuters that the emergency signals were transmitted after the two pilots became involved in a physical altercation inside the cockpit.

Passenger accounts cited by Reuters also described screams coming from the cockpit. One passenger’s family member said the passenger reported seeing a man with a knife forcing one of the pilots to the floor and blood inside the aircraft. Reuters said it could not immediately verify an image reportedly showing a blood-stained shirt.

Other Israeli media reports have made additional claims about what may have triggered the confrontation, including an alleged attempt to take control of the aircraft. These details have not been independently established and remain part of the ongoing investigation.

Aircraft Descended Rapidly Before Diversion

Flight-tracking information showed the aircraft making a rapid descent shortly before the emergency signals were transmitted.

Reuters reported that the Boeing 737 descended by nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds. The aircraft subsequently turned away from its original route to Tel Aviv and headed towards Saudi Arabia.

The aircraft eventually landed at Tabuk Airport, where passengers and crew were brought to safety.

Flydubai Confirms Safe Landing

Flydubai said it had an incident in FZ1073 on the way to Tel Aviv and diverted it to Tabuk.

All passengers and crew were safe and accounted for after the plane made a safe landing, the airline said. It said it was cooperating with authorities and would provide more information when it is confirmed.

The exact nature of the cockpit incident, including the reasons for triggering the emergency signals, are still under investigation.

Unusual Saudi Landing For Israel-Bound Flight

The diversion was notable because Saudi Arabia and Israel do not have formal diplomatic relations.

The aircraft was nevertheless allowed to land safely at Tabuk as the emergency situation unfolded. The incident also highlighted the security concerns surrounding an Israel-bound commercial flight after the transmission of the 7500 code.

After the emergency landing it is expected that the passengers will be assisted with arrangements to continue their journey to Israel.

The investigation will be directed at what occurred inside the aircraft, the emergency signals that were sent out and the order in which they were sent.
