Andhra Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Anil Chandra Punetha has ordered tighter security after clashes during local body election nominations in Rayachoti and Punganur. He said action would follow once reports on the incidents had been received.
Punetha said political leaders had raised concerns with him and that he had discussed the matter with the relevant district Superintendents of Police. At a review meeting with senior police and election officials in Vijayawada on Saturday, he directed authorities to prevent further disturbances and deploy additional forces if clashes occurred.
Officials were told to provide security to eligible candidates and install CCTV cameras at every polling station. In line with Andhra Pradesh High Court directions, only a candidate and three other people may enter a nomination centre. Punetha warned that officials found negligent would be suspended and replaced immediately.
IPS officer Rajakumari said security arrangements had been made across all districts, with measures tailored to areas identified as sensitive. She said the Annamayya district SP had monitored the situation in Punganur and worked to restore order. Complaints received over the incidents had been sent to the relevant district SPs for action.
Cases have been registered against those allegedly responsible, Rajakumari said, adding that people involved in unlawful activity could face bind-over proceedings. She said steps were being taken to ensure candidates from all parties could file nominations without hindrance.
