January 4 is designated as World Braille Day, which highlights the importance of Braille as a means of communication for the blind and partially sighted. Since 2019, the United Nations has observed the day. Louis Braille was born on January 4, 1809, and was also celebrated World Braille Day. The French schoolteacher developed the Braille system after going blind as a child.
Braille is a tactile representation of musical, mathematical, and scientific symbols and alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots for each letter and number. Blind and partially sighted persons can read the same books and magazines printed in a visual font using the Braille system, which bears the name of its French inventor from the 19th century, Louis Braille.
As stated in article 2 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Braille is crucial in education, freedom of expression and opinion, and social inclusion.
