Student induction programme – Deeksharambh - underway at English and Foreign Languages University

Hyderabad: Prof. E. Suresh Kumar, Vice Chancellor, the English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, inaugurated the six-day Deeksharambh–Student Induction Programme (SIP) at the University 0n Thursday. The six-day programme recommended by the University Grants Commission (UGC), aims to acclimatise freshers with the new surroundings, develop bond with fellow students and teachers and sensitivity towards various issues of social relevance, and imbibe human values in them so as to become the responsible citizens.

Delivering the inaugural address, the V-C motivated the students to have career goals early in life and work relentlessly to achieve them. He also enthused the newcomers to accumulate knowledge and acquire skills about how to learn. He urged the students to recognise that each individual is unique and work on their strengths and develop confidence. Keeping in view the different aspects of SAGE—socialising, associating, governing and experiencing—the six-day induction programme would expose learners to lectures by eminent people, visits to different facilities available on the Campus, appraise them of the rules and regulations of the University, and take part in creative and performing arts and literary activities.

Eminent people such as Gampa Nageswar Rao; Harichandana Dasari, Additional Commissioner, Telangana State Public Service Commission; Prof. Gopal Rao, former Head, Department of English, Osmania University; and Prof. C. Bina, Department of Psychology; Prof. S. Upendran, Department of Materials Development, Testing and Evaluation; Prof. Vijaya Bole, Department of Geography, Dr. J. Lalitha, Faculty Member, IASE; will be sharing their expertise on a wide range of topics—Career Planning, Creative Arts and Culture, Reading a Book or an Article and Summarising it, Ethics and Value, English through Songs, Disaster Management, and Demonstration of Arts.

In addition to these interactive sessions, students are encouraged to stage a street play, and show case their talents such as music, dance, and painting and the likes. One of the most important sessions of the induction was orienting students to various Courses and Programmes that the University offers at the undergraduate, postgraduate, teacher education, and doctoral levels.

Under the Mentor-Mentee Sessions on Universal Human Values each student is assigned a mentor who is a member of the teaching faculty and the mentor groups will continue for the whole duration of a programme of study, assist students through interaction on contemporary concerns and develop their competencies/talents to be successful in their future ventures. The inaugural session attracted more than seven hundred people—freshers, parents, and members of the teaching and non-teaching staff. The session was well-received and applauded by everyone.
