‘AI Wargi’: Shanaya The Doll Turns ‘Are You Even Real?’ Into Her Music Debut

New Delhi: After years of facing the same question online - “Are you even real?” - Toronto-based artist and digital personality Shanaya The Doll is turning the speculation surrounding her appearance into the theme of her music debut. Her upcoming Punjabi-English track, AI Wargi, draws directly from the doll-inspired image, luxury aesthetic and highly stylised persona that have become central to her online identity.

The title AI Wargi is derived from the Punjabi word “wargi”, meaning “like” or “resembling”, and reflects the way Shanaya says people have described her appearance as artificial or computer-generated. The repeated comparisons to artificial intelligence eventually became the inspiration for her first song.

“Every time I would talk to someone new, people would ask me if I was AI,” Shanaya said. “Sometimes I literally had to prove that I was a real person.”

Known for her fashion, beauty and doll-like aesthetic, Shanaya has built a distinctive digital persona that has frequently prompted users to question whether her photographs and videos were digitally altered or generated using AI. Rather than distancing herself from those comparisons, she decided to make them the foundation of her debut.

“I realized that being called AI was actually one of the biggest compliments,” she said. “People were basically telling me I looked too unreal to be real. So I thought, why not make an entire song about it?”

For Shanaya, AI Wargi is not about creating a fictional character for the music industry. Instead, she says the track reflects the identity she has already developed as Shanaya The Doll. The project combines luxury, fashion, beauty and nightlife, with its visual production taking place in Toronto and Vancouver. The imagery is designed to capture what she describes as her “doll life”.

At the same time, Shanaya wanted the project to maintain a sense of authenticity. “If I’m making a song called AI Wargi, I want people to actually see me,” she said. “I wanted everything to feel natural and real. The whole point is showing that even without AI, I can still give you that AI-looking doll fantasy.”

The release also marks a new chapter for Shanaya as a Canadian artist with Punjabi and Persian roots. She said the track allows her to bring those cultural influences together with the Western luxury aesthetic that has become part of her public persona.

The process of putting the project together, however, was not without challenges. Shanaya recalled approaching Punjabi video creator Harpreet Brar after being introduced through a mutual connection. According to Shanaya, Brar initially showed interest in the project and spoke with her over the phone about her creative vision.

She said Brar later told her that he would review the concept and get back to her, but she did not hear from him for around a week. Shanaya said her best friend, who had recommended Brar, eventually contacted him while she was present. According to Shanaya, Brar told her that he was unsure how to respond because he felt her image was “too vulgar for the Punjabi community” and that his team was not comfortable working with her.

Shanaya said the experience was disappointing, particularly because she had initially believed the collaboration would move ahead. However, she said it also reinforced her decision to work with creative professionals who were comfortable with her unconventional image and understood the direction she wanted to take.

She eventually connected with Rafi Makush of RM Productions, whom she credits with helping bring AI Wargi together. “He made me feel comfortable,” Shanaya said. “Instead of judging the vision, he understood what I was trying to create.”

According to Shanaya, she has invested close to CAD $40,000 in the project, covering music production, recording, visual production, styling and filming. She has also chosen to perform the song herself, making the release a significant step beyond her established work as a digital personality.

The project brings together her Punjabi and Persian heritage with the Western luxury and fashion aesthetic associated with her public image. Its central concept, however, remains rooted in the question that has followed her for years — whether her appearance is real.

With AI Wargi, Shanaya is turning that question into a creative statement. Her doll-like appearance becomes part of the visual narrative, while the fashion, luxury and lifestyle elements familiar to her audience are woven into the project.

“AI Wargi is literally me,” she said. “The luxury, the doll appearance, the lifestyle, the attitude — everything comes from my real life.”

For Shanaya, the message behind the song is straightforward: an appearance that looks unreal does not necessarily mean it is artificial. With AI Wargi, she is taking a long-running conversation about her identity and appearance and using it as the starting point for her transition from digital personality to recording artist.
