Warangal: NIT suspends 11 students for consuming ganja

Warangal: The students of National Institute of Technology (NIT) who were found guilty of consuming ganja recently will have to forego an academic year.

Stating that it has zero tolerance when it comes to the matter of dealing with those consuming drugs on its campus, the management of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) has on Saturday suspended 11 B Tech first year students, who were found in a State of inebriation on the night of October 26.

It may be recalled here that the campus security staff had found traces of ganja in one of the rooms of 1.8K Hostel on the intervening night of October 26 and 27 on the campus. Following which the NIT management had confirmed that some students were in a state of intoxication on that day, based on the probe conducted by the Disciplinary Committee.

It is also learnt that the students facing allegation had confessed before the Disciplinary Committee, stating that they have consumed small quantity of the banned substance which they never did before.

Against this backdrop, the NIT management suspended 11 students with immediate effect and till the end of the ongoing academic year. The students will have to repeat the entire first year afresh during the next academic year, starting from July 2020. In addition, the management had also imposed other sanctions including fine and other penalties.

The management cautioned the students not to indulge in any such offences that bring disrepute to the institute. It also said that surprise raids at regular intervals would be conducted on the campus, according to the NIT Registrar S Goverdhan Rao.
