DGP orders probe into lashing of woman by head constable
Guntur: Director General of Police R P Thakur on Tuesday directed the Guntur Urban police officials to conduct detailed inquiry into assaulting of woman with hunter at the Nagarampalem Model Police Station on the night of September 2 by head constable Venkateswara Rao and submit the report within two- months.
After getting detailed report, the higher officials will take further action. Based on the primary report and, Guntur Urban police officials placed head constable Venkateswara Rao under suspension. The head constable who assaulted the woman was in inebriated condition. Guntur West DSP P Sowmya Latha was conducting department inquiry.
The HELP (NGO) organiser N Ramamohan said, "According to GO MS No. 1 and 28, sex workers should be rehabilitated. As soon as sex workers are arrested, police should produce them in the court.
The Women and Child Welfare Department should give immediate relief of Rs. 20,000 to the victims under Immoral Traffic Prevention Act. The sex workers should be given training to create self-employment. Due to various problems, the victims involve in the sex trade. The police should not beat them.’’
District Women and Child Welfare Department Project Director N Padmaja said : We have Swadhar Homes in the district to rehabilitate the sex workers. There are two Swadhar Homes in Guntur city - One at Mahila Pranganam another one at Kothapet - and another home in Tenali town. We will impart necessary training to the sex workers to create self-employment to them.
