Tiger electrocuted in Maharashtra, dies farm near Tadoba-Andhari Reserve

Nagpur/Chandrapur: A sub-adult tiger was found dead after getting electrocuted in a farm near the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Chandrapur district, a Forest department official said Sunday.

Deputy Conservator of Forests (TATR) Gajendra Narwane said the body of the tiger was found at around 10pm Saturday in a farm in Bhamdeli village in the Moharli buffer zone of the reserve.

“It was a sub-adult collared tiger. A post mortem was conducted Sunday morning. It was electrocuted some time in the morning on Saturday,” Narwane told PTI.

A statement from TATR authorities said the deceased tiger was the offspring of the reserve’s T-7 tigress. Officials said two persons, identified as Rishi Nannawar and Vishal Dhoke, who reportedly own the farm, have been detained by the forest department and are being questioned over the prohibited electric fencing installed at the site.

The statement said TATR director N.R. Praveen and other officials, along with National Tiger Conservation Authority representative Bandu Dhotre and veterinary doctor Ravinkant Khobragade reached the spot Sunday morning.

Poachers’ trap killed Odisha tiger

A translocated tiger, the carcass of which was found in an Odisha sanctuary last month, died after falling into a trap laid by poachers, two central government agencies dealing with wildlife have said. This was stated by a joint inspection team of the National Tiger Conservation Authority and the Wildlife Institute of India in its report. The report is at variance with the state government’s claim that the big cat named “Mahavir” died after killing a porcupine. The report of the joint team of the NTCA and the WII said “Mahavir” had sustained deep wounds around its neck while trying to escape from a trap laid by poachers.
