Rally to mark Sports Day organised in Vijayawada

Vijayawada: Minister Kollu Ravindra flagged off a rally from Benz Circle to Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium to mark Sports Day here on Wednesday. The minister along with district collector B Lakshimikantham and others participated in the rally.

Speaking on the occasion minister Ravindra said that sports day was organised on the birth anniversary of legendry Hockey player Major Dhyanchand from Alahabad on August 29. 

He recalled that Dhyanchand had won many Olympic medals for the country in 1928, 1932 and 1936 consecutively. He said that week-long celebrations will be organised across the state.

He said Rs 2 crore was spent for providing sports kits across to all the 13 districts in the state. As much as Rs 3.75 lakh was released to organise sports at 13 districts including Tirupathi sports school, Srinivasa Sports Complex, said that minister.

He recalled that the Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu has launched project Gandhiva to bring hidden talent from the rural areas and to transform them as good sports players. 

He said that games like Hockey, Kho kho, Volley ball were organised for the last two days to mark the occasion, said the minister. 

The minister further said that a stadium will be constructed for every constituency to make Andhra Pradesh as sports hub, he added.
