TS Govt urged to support handloom weavers

Basheerbagh: Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) Party President Prof M Kodandaram and National BC Welfare Association President R Krishnaiah on Friday demanded TRS government for its full support for the welfare and development of over 50,000 handloom workers in the state.

Addressing a meeting in Press Club here on the recent agitation of handloom weavers in New Delhi, under the leadership of Dasu Suresh, and to finalise an action place, the leaders claimed that Suresh had succeeded in taking the problems of handloom workers to the Central government's notice.

Prof Kodandaram suggested of holding a handloom exhibition in the city for creating public awareness on the importance of handlooms. He called for an action programme to be taken up on the National Handloom Day, August 7, while pledging the party's support.

Krishnaiah stated that suicides of handloom weavers would come down if small-scale industries are encouraged and given a boost by the government as being done in China. He wanted Rs10, 000 crore to be allotted to the handloom sub-plan and to extend of subsidy and marketing support to all small and marginal weavers.
