Roll back move for uranium mining
Bagh Lingampally: The All India Peace and Solidarity Organisation (AIPSO) general secretary, Dr Sudhakar, has demanded that the Central government withdraw the permissions given for mining uranium in Nallamala forests. He was speaking at a signature campaign against uranimum mining in Nallamala forests started here at Sundaraiah Vignana Kendram on Sunday.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sudhakar said that the Central government had given permission to mine uranium in 7,000 sq km area of Nallamala forests. He expressed his concerns that this decision may not only destroy the environment but also endanger lives of tribal people living in the forest.
Clarifying that they were not against developmental programmes, he urged all the parties to stage united fight against uranium mining in the forests to protect environment, tribals and fauna. He said a memorandum would be submitted along with signatures collected to the Governor. Organisation's state secretary KVL, CPI leaders Rakesh Singh, J Surender, Arjun Singh, Rajender, Ramaraju and others were present on the occasion.
