Jamaat-e-Islami Hind strongly opposes NRC & proposed CAB

Charminar: Expressing grave apprehensions following the announcement by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah that the The National Register of Citizens (NRC) would be implemented across India, the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has questioned the rationale behind the idea. Describing it as an exercise in vain and a deliberate diversion of priorities for the nation, it decided to strongly oppose it.

Speaking to media persons at its head office in Chattabazar on Tuesday, JIH state president Maulana Hamid Mohammed Khan said that when there were already known procedures and laws to identify foreigners or illegal immigrants, then putting 135 crore people to difficulty was unjustified. The failure of NRC exercise in Assam showed its futility. Nearly two million applicants are not in the final list. The government has no idea what to do with them.

Repeated assertion that Assam had four million infiltrators turned out to be false. Nationwide NRC will only cause inconvenience to all citizens, especially minorities and marginalised communities. "If the government doubts the status of any citizen, it must prove that the citizen is not a legal resident and not the other way round, wherein bona fide citizens of India also will have to prove their citizenship with documentary evidence," he said.

On the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), the leader said that it was against the spirit of Indian Constitution and termed it discriminatory. He wondered why the Union government proposed to grant citizenship only to Hindus coming to India from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, and not to other religious communities.

"This Bill goes against the basic idea of India as an inclusive, diverse, secular and democratic nation envisaged by the founding fathers of our Constitution. It is part of the agenda of communal polarisation and we are sure the people of India will not fall prey to such divisive politics. If the government insists on nation-wide NRC and pushes for the CAB, then Jamaat will oppose it. We hope the opposition parties will play their role in Parliament and stop the passage of these futile initiatives," he noted.

Condemns police action in Jawaharlal Nehru University

The organisation has also condemned the crackdown on the students of Jawaharlal Nehru University by the Delhi police and CRPF. Referring to the news reports that students were lathi-charged by Delhi police and CRPF, Khan said that in a democratic setup, such use of excessive force against the student community was quite deplorable.

"We feel that the students' demand for rollback of their hostel fees, which has been hiked 1000%, is genuine and the JNU administration and HRD Ministry must accept it," he added. Md Azharuddin, PR secretary, Syed Faqruddin Ali Ahmed, media secretary, and others were present.
