Vijayawada: NSS, Red Cross hold awareness camp on plastics-free district
Vijayawada: An awareness programme was conducted by the NSS Unit and the Youth Red Cross Volunteers of Velagapudi Ramakrishna Siddhartha Engineering College at Kasaranenivari Palem on Saturday to make Krishna district a plastic-free district and Swachha Krishna.
The village is one of the adopted villages of the College under 'Unnat Bharat Abhiyan' programme sponsored by Ministry of Human Resources Development. Dr Kolla Narendra, UBA coordinator and NSS programme officer said, "While we are going out carrying a mobile with us, then why do we hesitate to carry a cloth bag which is very less in weight when compared to mobile phone?" He requested one and all to make it a habit to keep a cloth bag in vehicle.
On this occasion, the students raised slogans against use of plastic bags and carry bags and also explained their adverse impacts on environment. They also suggested people to use cloth bags and paper bags. They distributed cloth bags to people, which are sponsored by Lions Club of Vijayawada. Also, it was attempted to spread the awareness on proper disposal of plastic waste to facilitate its recycling or conversion into energy at waste-to-energy plants.
Lions Club members Tatineni Rambabu and Vallabaneni Balaji Babu, village secretary Kiran Kumar, College Civil department Assistant Professor UV Narayana, Grama Sachivalayam employees and volunteers participated.
