Lucknow/Kanpur: A section of the Lucknow University Road outside the residence of former Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Dinesh Sharma caved in on Wednesday, leaving two people injured. The two, who were riding a scooter, fell into a hole several feet deep. “My brothers were coming from the Kaiserbagh side when their bike fell into the caved-in section. Both of them were admitted to a hospital,” Abhay Prajapati said.

Police and Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) officials have cordoned off the stretch. Preliminary assessments suggested the cave-in was triggered by an underground pipeline leak or seepage from a drain that eroded the soil. In Kanpur’s Harsh Nagar area, a covered drain caved in after heavy rain on Tuesday, leaving behind a nearly 10-foot-deep crater, 25 feet in length, with only two feet of road intact.

‘The drain on the Brahm Nagar-Eidgah road first sank in a week ago. The fresh cave-in triggered panic among residents and prompted the Jal-Kal department to raise barricades around the hole.

Repair work by the Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) team has been underway since last week.
