Thimmapur villagers pledge to go plastice-free
Distressed by the hazardous effects of plastic usage, the villagers of Thimmapur, Morthad mandal, Nizamabad district, decided not to use plastic and to make their village plastic-free.
Nizamabad: Distressed by the hazardous effects of plastic usage, the villagers of Thimmapur, Morthad mandal, Nizamabad district, decided not to use plastic and to make their village plastic-free. They took oath on August 15 this year, the 73rd Independence Day and since the day has been enforcing strict rules.
Under the leadership of Thimmapur Rural Development Committee, Sarpanch Gaddam Chinna Reddy and MPTC member Asma, the villagers have stopped using plastic covers, cups and glasses for the past 15 days.
Local merchants also extended their support for the cause. Grocery stores, meat vendors, hotel owners and vegetable vendors announced that they will not give plastic covers to the customers and agreed to use cloth bags. The village panchayat governing body panchayat decided to buy cloth bags and distribute them freely to the villagers.
Sarpanch G Chinna Reddy and MPTC member Asma said that they took the decision to ban plastic items after observing its harmful effects and to protect the environment. They took the consent of every villager and implemented their decision.
Stating that they are working to make Thimmapur as an ideal plastic-free village in Nizamabad district, they gave a call to all to come forward to protect the environment and the animals. They lauded the contribution of the villagers in this regard.
They hoped that other villages will follow them and transform their villages as plastic-free. Thimmapur already became an ideal village for the neighbouring villages by electing the local body unanimously.
