Stone pelting in Amberpet among two communities leads to tension in Amberpet

Hyderabad: Tension prevailed at Amberpet on Sunday evening when people of two communities pelted stones on each other regarding a dispute over the demolition of a place of worship earlier.

Many were injured in the stone pelting including an Inspector and a constable with bleeding injuries and children and women got minor injuries.

City Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar along with other officials rushed to the spot and deployed additional forces to bring the situation under control.

MIM and BJP leaders reaching the spot once again led to mild tension in the area.

Police resorted to lathi charge and dispersed both the groups and later arrested BJP Floor Leader T Raja Singh and shifted him from the spot to avoid communal violence in Amberpet.

CP said the situation was totally under control and appealed to the public not to believe rumors on social media spread by the miscreants.

CP issued orders asking all All web channels not to post any provocative videos of Amberpet issue. If anybody posts or forward such videos they will be booked under criminal case.

To meet any untoward incidents, city police deployed additional forces and diverted the traffic in different directions from Amberpet X road.

The entire stretch from Amberpet X road to the Golnaka area was cardoned off resulting in a curfew like situation.

Patrolling and survelliance has been increased and police imposed restrictions on public movement.

CP Anjani Kumar along with other law and order police officials are personally camping there taking stock of the situation and maintaining the normalcy in Amberpet.

He ordered the higher officials to be alert till morning to avoid escalation of tensions in the area.

Earlier mild tension prevailed at Amberpet on Thursday and Friday as a place of worship was allegedly demolished by the GHMC officials for road widening on Wednesday night.

The issue was boiling for the last two days on Thursday and Friday. After series of reactions over the issue by different political parties, Waqf Board and the Home Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali, tension was reduced.

But when The Telangana State Waqf Board has criticized the GHMC officials over the demolition and some religious groups along with political parties staged dharna at the site condemning the demolition, it took a political turn and the situation even worsened on Sunday evening when they again started construction at the site which further led to stone pelting between two groups.

Earlier Town Planning Director K Srinivas Rao clarified that the place of worship was at a different address, which was acquired by the Roads and Buildings department in 1984 for road widening.

He also clarified that the property owner was paying property tax since 1955 and after verifying all the records they have paid him a compensation of Rs 2.2 crore before demolishing the mosque.
