Rajendranagar: All sewage inlets into Mir Alam to be shut

Rajendranagar: The long-pending dream of making the Mir Alam tank completely free of all sorts of pollution appears to be close to reality. The officials of the irrigation department have decided to close down all sewage inlets into the water body, as the next plan of action.

As part of the beautification works, the department has decided to close down all sewage inlets of houses from surrounding areas running directly into the tank to prevent the gray water from entering into the water body thereby contaminating the water.

As a solution, the officials have come up with a plan to build box drains all around the encompassing way to the lake in order to direct the sewerage, coming out of the nearby houses, to flush out through the route directly into the diversion canal and thereby end up at sewerage treatment plant (STP) already set up on the banks of the water body.

It is pertinent to mention here that recently the top GHMC officials visited the lake close to Kishanbagh lake and take stock of the beautifications works going around the water body such as the promotion of walkway and cycle track.

At the instance, the officials took serious note of garbage being scattered around and sewerage being allowed to run on the track way turning the entire ambience dirty and ugly.

Speaking to The Hans India, one of the officials at the helm of affairs informed that it was decided to build box drains every few meters away encircling the lake to allow the sewer emanating from the nearby houses to end up into the box from where it reaches into diversion canal. "With this idea we will be able to prevent the sewerage gushing out from the surrounding colonies from entering into the lake. With this the issue of passing the sewerage flow directly into the lake would be resolved," he noted.

"Presently, the works of track as well as diversion canal are in progress simultaneously. Later on, we will take up the box drain works to put a complete full stop on flowing sewerage into the water body," the official said.

Walkway and cycle track around the lake are gradually taking shape and would be completed in the next 3 to 4 months as per the agreement reached with the Vanteru Infra Projects (India) company.

The diversion canal of 6.5 km length is being constructed with an outlay of about Rs7 crore. This is to ensure diversion of the sewerage inflows into the water body from surrounding areas to the STP through the diversion canal, the official informed.
