Hyderabad: Huge traffic violations even during lockdown

Hyderabad: In case of buying groceries, locals are asked to not go more than 3 km radius of their houses during the pandemic. However, the guidelines in the city have been falling on deaf ears as always. Despite several appeals, people in the city have been brazenly violating the guidelines, be it any occasion and however severe it may be.
According to the recent data by the Hyderabad traffic police, as many as 14,027 cases were booked for violations only on a single day i.e., May 17. Out of these cases, 4,448 cases were contact cases, including spot challans as per the MV Act (4415 cases) and Sec 41 CP Act or car lifting cases (33 cases). The other 9,579 cases were of non-contact nature including e-challans (8,768), social network (3), SCMC cases (216 cases), speed laser gun cases (215) and Intelligent Traffic Management System (377 cases). According to the data, enforcement and detained vehicles during the lockdown period from March 23 to May 17 were around 93,780.
Speaking to The Hans India, Anil Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Hyderabad, said, "Earlier we were informed to seize the vehicles of those who were found violating the norms and return them after the lockdown was lifted. However, after the recent order from DGP, vehicles of the violators were asked to be released and challans were issued. From then we have not been seizing vehicles."
As on Sunday, around 4,210 total paid cases were booked and a total of Rs 11,13,850 was collected. Ironically, challans were issued to 10 police officials on the same day.
The data also included the violations of MV Act rules on Sunday. As per the data, around 12, 735 such cases were booked for violations. Out of this, the highest number of cases relate to driving without helmet (9,774 cases), followed by driving without seat belt (1,062 cases).
Around 5,180 violations were booked under contact enforcement which included two-wheelers in 3,071 cases, three-wheelers in 505 cases, four-wheeler in 1,607 cases and others such as trucks (1 case). As per the data from January till May 17, a total of 717 accidents including simple, grievous and fatal accidents took place. In these accidents, around 739 persons were injured and 74 people killed.
The data on during the period from March 23 to May 7 states that a total of 8,63,750 cases were booked through total enforcement that includes contact and non-contact enforcement. Around 7, 53,689 two- wheeler cases, 20,756 three-wheeler cases, 85,300 four-wheeler cases and 4,005 other vehicles cases were booked. Around 99,758 vehicles were also seized.
