Warangal: On the surface, the elections to the Primary Cooperative Agricultural Societies (PACS) on which the entire three-tier cooperative structure is built upon may not generate as much interest as the others, but it certainly has a lot of significance for those willing to foray into politics. For them, the names of Minister for Panchayat Raj Errabelli Dayakar Rao, former legislators Konda Muralidhar Rao and Donti Madhava Reddy, who started their political career by getting elected as Directors to the PACS, are enough to draw inspiration.

It may be mentioned here that if elected to the Director of a PACS, that person has a scope not only to make it to the Chairperson of the District Central Cooperative Bank (DCCB) but also to the Telangana State Cooperative Apex Bank Limited (TSCOB). Against this backdrop, a lot of leaders, mostly of second rung cadres, have been trying tooth and nail to get elected to the PACS as the Directors first before throwing their hat in the ring for the Chairperson or Vice-chairperson posts.

Even though the PACS' elections are being held on the basis of non-political party symbols, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appears to be very keen to put up a good performance in the February 15 polling.

Notwithstanding its massive performance in the previous elections held in 2013, the Congress now looks like a pale shadow of its former self, after suffering huge setbacks in the panchayat and the parishad polls held last year. On the other hand, the TRS which won almost everything within its vicinity is oozing with confidence to extend its magical run in the PACS elections as well. The BJP is also wants to prove a point or two in this election.

In erstwhile Warangal district, the number of PACS is 99, however, elections are going to be held for 97 of them. While the total number of Director posts is 1,260, a little over 509 candidates have been elected unanimously. It's learnt that as many as 1,860 candidates are in the fray for the other 751 Director posts.

On the other hand, a hectic lobbying has already begun long back for the DCCB Chairman post with the aspirants running around their godfathers. Meanwhile, reports suggest that Marneni Ravinder Rao, Nimmagadda Venkanna, Kandi Srinivas Reddy and Gundreddy Rajeshwar Reddy are the top contenders for the DCCB Chairman post.

Nimmagadda Venkanna and Kandi Srinivas Reddy have pinned their hopes on Parkal MLA Challa Dharma Reddy, it's learnt. Gundreddy Rajeshwar Reddy is said to have the blessings of Farmers Coordination Committee Chairman Palla Rajeshwar Reddy and former Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari.
