Hyderabad: In a significant development, the Centre has decided to implement Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) quota for MBBS seats in Private Medical Colleges across India from this academic year itself.
The Medical Council of India (MCI) had sent a communication (marked most urgent/immediate) to all States to this effect.
All private colleges were given time till June 28 to submit their proposals for additional seats to facilitate implementation of EWS quota. Coming to Telangana, 15 private medical colleges, barring six minority and two new medical colleges, would be eligible to send proposals for additional seats.
The EWS reservations would be considered only for convener quota MBBS seats. Considering this, the number of convener seats in 15 private medical colleges comes to nearly 850-900 seats.
The MCI has given 25 per cent increase of additional seats in government medical colleges for implementing EWS quota and going by this statistic, private medical colleges are likely to get 200 plus additional seats.
Also taking into account 190 additional seats allotted to six government medical colleges in Telangana already, the State is set to get roughly 400 additional seats for the current academic year.
Under EWS quota, 200 seats are likely to be on offer from government and private medical colleges for eligible students.
