Cotton Corporation begins procurement: Errabelli Dayakar Rao
The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) needs to be compassionate towards cotton farmers while determining the price, Minister for Panchayat Raj Errabelli Dayakar Rao said.
Warangal: The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) needs to be compassionate towards cotton farmers while determining the price, Minister for Panchayat Raj Errabelli Dayakar Rao said.
The Minister inaugurated CCI's cotton purchase centre at Enumamula Agriculture Market Yard here on Thursday. He discussed about cotton arrivals and price with the officials, traders and farmers.
"The moisture content in the cotton bolls is a bit high due to unceasing rains this season, hence, the CCI officials need to be lenient and provide remunerative price to the farmers. The issue will be taken to the notice of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao so that he would pursue the Central government to procure entire produce from the farmers," he said.
Stating that cotton cultivated in the erstwhile Warangal district was of high quality, he urged the CCI to provide remunerative price to the farmers' produce. "The officials need to be sympathetic when they ascertain the price of cotton.
Even though the moisture content is a bit more in the cotton bolls, farmers deserve a better price," Errabelli said. The price of cotton in last four years was satisfactory and the phenomena should be continued this season as well, he told the CCI officials.
Predicting a bumper cotton harvest this season, he told the officials to procure all the produce which has less than 12 per cent moisture content. He directed the authorities to settle the deal on the same day the farmers bring their produce to the market.
Additional staff would be deputed to complete the purchases so that farmers wouldn't have to wait in the market days together, he added. He told the CCI officials to procure cotton from all the cultivators without fail.
On the first day of purchases, farmers got a support price of Rs 5,550 per quintal. Farmers Debt Relief Commission Chairman Nagurla Venkateshwarlu, Wardhannapet MLA Aroori Ramesh, Joint Collector S Dayanand, RDO K Venka Reddy, CCI General Manager Jaya Kumar and Marketing DD Ajmeera Raju were among others present.
