Denied TRS leaders put up acts to draw attention
Hyderabad: Amid stray incidents of dharnas and agitations by the disgruntled TRS candidates who were denied B forms on the last day of the withdrawal of nominations on Tuesday, more than 20,000 contestants are set to fight the elections in 129 urban local bodies (ULBs), including nine municipal corporations.
State Election Commission (SEC) said that a few candidates, out of the 20,000 filed, withdrew the nominations. A final figure of the total contestants will be known only after all the returning officers compile the data from all poll-bound municipalities.
The election will be held on January 22 and the results will be out on January 25. The total number of polling stations in the 120 municipalities is 6,325 for 2,727 wards. In the Corporations, 1,786 polling stations were set up for the voters to exercise their franchise in 385 wards.
The number of aspirants to contest the elections from the ruling TRS was more than the opposition Congress and BJP. The TRS local leaders who were denied B – Forms held dharnas, and also quit the party in some assembly segments in Telangana.
One ticket aspirant in Ward No 14 of the Medchal Municipality Vijay attempted suicide by pouring kerosene for denying party ticket. Vijay poured kerosene at the Ambedkar Statue.
Alert police personnel took Vijay into their custody and shifted to the police station. The TRS leader alleged that party leaders had asked him to show a deposit of Rs 25 lakh to get the ticket.
In another incident, a woman TRS leader Ganga Bhavani tried to hang herself at the camp office of the local MLA M Yadagiri Reddy in Jangaon Assembly constituency. Leaders prevented Bhavani from doing so and tried to pacify her. She announced quitting the party.
In Suryapet, a TRS leader Abdul Raheem aspired to contest from Ward No 39 in the municipality. He also filed his nomination papers with huge rally but the party gave ticket to M Sudha Rani, who is said to be in race for chairperson.
With party denying the ticket, the TRS leader tried to commit suicide by hanging at his residence. The locals rushed to Raheem's residence and saved and also consoled him.
In a jolt to the TRS in Alampur assembly segment, Ija mandal president Tirumal Reddy resigned from his post .
The leader alleged that the party allotted the ticket to the defected leaders and ignored the workers who served the party for two dacades.
Leaders said that party working president KT Rama Rao is holding meetings with all MLAs and party incharges to defuse the rebel threat in the elections.
