Airtel, Jio in later stages of testing VoWiFi services
VoWiFi is a technology that allows users to connect even without a mobile signal.
According to the reports, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJio) are in advanced stages of testing Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) services. The move will permit the telecom companies to take on over-the-top (OTT) players and keep them from eating their revenues.
VoWiFi technology enables users to connect with no mobile signal as the technology eradicates mobile blackspots by allowing users to make and receive calls over WiFi or wireless internet connections.
OTT player's such as WhatsApp is presently offering this feature.
As per earlier media reports, Jio has been testing its Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi) in different regions like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh whereas Airtel is testing the services across its leading circles such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
Some reports also demonstrated a screenshot of an iPhone being connected to Reliance Jio's public Wi-Fi.
