Relocating Sculptures Could Cause Law And Order Difficulties In Tamil Nadu

The Madras High Court's current order to demolish sculptures of individuals from public areas has alarmed government officials, who believe that the action may contribute to law and order difficulties.

A petition opposing the removal of a BR Ambedkar statue in Ranipet district was dismissed by the court. Justice SM Subramaniam had ordered the State administration to find sculptures of numerous political figures and individuals throughout the state and move them to a 'leaders park.' Although the government has yet to respond to the directive, community leaders and officials have expressed worry over the court ruling.

A senior functionary from the VOC Peravai stated the state's sculpture of their leader is a source of pride for the community, and they will not allow it to be moved. The monuments were created as a representation of the leaders' values and as a sign of solidarity and admiration for them. They serve as a remembrance that their forefathers fought for their rights. Whenever the administration contemplates the idea to resettle it, it will be unjust and a severe concern.

However, there are 152 statues in Tiruchy district, including 35 of previous CM MG Ramachandran, 29 of Periyar, 20 more of Kamarajar, and 17 of Mahatma Gandhi. Tamizhnathan, a VCK official, had a similar message taht the presence of an Ambedkar statue in a colony gives residents a sense of security and power. They are extremely important for people's life, and their removal would have disastrous effects. The government would make a well-informed decision on this.

Meanwhile, the speculation recently circulated that the Muthraiyur statue on Bharathidasan Salai would be moved to make way for the development of an overhead walkway. Several Muthraiyur organisations were outraged, and they launched a large-scale demonstration in the city.
