India vs West Indies: Virat Kohli on the verge of setting another world record
Indian skipper Virat Kohli has emerged as one of the greatest batsmen of the modern era.
Indian skipper Virat Kohli has emerged as one of the greatest batsmen of the modern era. Gobbling records for fun, the 30-year-old has raked up staggering figures across all three formats of the game.
As India take on West Indies in Manchester on 27 June, Thursday, the number-one ranked ODI batsman will once again be on the cusp of entering the record books for an umpteenth time.
Virat Kohli, who is already the fastest batsman to score 10,000 and 11,000 ODI runs, is likely to add another feather to his glorious cap by breaking the recordset by legendary batsmen Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara.
With 6613 runs in Tests, 11087 runs in ODIs and 2263 runs in T20Is, Kohli currently accounts for 19,963 international runs from just 416 innings across all formats. The man now stands just 37 runs away from taking his run-tally to 20,000 runs.
More importantly, Thursday's game will give him an opportunity to achieve the feat in 417 innings and break the records of Tendulkar and Lara who took 453 innings each to reach the milestone.
Australian great Ricky Ponting amassed 20,000 international runs in 468 innings and is currently placed third on the list.
Kohli will be entering the fray on the back of three successive half centuries in the tournament. After smashing 82 and 77 against Australia and Pakistan respectively, he scored 67 against Afghanistan on a testing pitch.
It is highly probable that the superstar will extend his purple patch and end up breaching the covetedmark at Old Trafford on Thursday.
It will be interesting to see how Jason Holder and his men will contain the batting genius of Kohli.
