Hyderabad: “Your friends have something special for you on this Teddy Day. To know call 5122255,” says a message on the mobile. Another SMS reads: “Dear BSNL subscriber – you are special subscriber for us. Just dial 56300 and win bike and more.” Yet another message says: “These things have made your words go crazy to us. Keep calling and talk for your Happiness also, at 550505120202.”
This type of messages keeps coming regularly on the mobile, seeking your friendship. One should be cautious of such fake enticing messages, which are meant to cheat you ultimately in different ways, after gaining your confidence and getting information from you; and also, by tricking you in several ways. The media is reporting how gullible people, including those educated and working in high positions, are being duped and deprived of their hard-earned money by unscrupulous people. The police and other authorities concerned are also cautioning people against frauds being perpetrated by cheats in the name of friendship, etc.
In this context, people should remember the recent incident in which a teacher from Mehdipatnam, Rosy, was duped by one person posing himself as a German national by name Mark Scot. Through facebook, he befriended her in November last. He gained her confidence and became very close friends. Later, he promised to send her valuable Gifts of diamonds, jewellery and dollars.
After a few days, she received a call from a woman who claimed to be a customs officer.
She told her that a big parcel in her name has come from Germany and she has to pay Rs.38,000 as customs duty. Rosy paid the amount in the bank account given by her. In a similar way, she received calls and asked her to pay some amounts on some pretext or the other, and in total she paid Rs.14.7 lakhs. When no parcel came to her, she realized that she was duped and then lodged a complaint with the police.
