Govt plans thrust to food processing units
To make farming a profitable profession and relieve farmers from distress, the State government is planning to set up food processing units Many a times, farmers are forced to leave their produce roadside or use it as a fodder to cattle after they fail to get a remunerative price for the produce
Vikarabad: To make farming a profitable profession and relieve farmers from distress, the State government is planning to set up food processing units. Many a times, farmers are forced to leave their produce roadside or use it as a fodder to cattle after they fail to get a remunerative price for the produce. Farmers hardly get any returns from the investment, as a result, they are forced to take drastic steps after failing to pay debts.
As part of alternative methods to make farming a profitable profession, the government is making plans to set up food processing units locally.
The officials said that these steps will improve the lifestyle of farmers and provide quality products to consumer at low prices. The officials are preparing proposals after collecting data of crops which are grown in the area and yield capacity to set up food processing units in the proposed areas.
A total of 14,214 self-help groups (SHG) are there in the district of which 1,35,345 are women members.
SHG members are earning good income after they set up Amchur and Tamarind processing units in Doma and Kulkacherla mandals. The officials have sent proposals to government to set up few more food processing units related to Redgram, Millets, Maize, Groundnut and Vegetables with an estimated cost of Rs 32.50 crore.
On one side, the farmers are facing a tough time as they are not getting MSP for their produce on the other the price of the products is very high in market. Farmers will get benefitted only when they directly sell the produce to the consumer. Keeping all this in mind, the government is planning for a scheme to develop agriculture sector as part of it, the government has directed the officials to make proposals in this regard. Redgram is cultivated in as many as 47,145 hectares in Tandur and Kodangal constituencies and getting a yield about 70,717 metric tonnes. Officials proposed for Redgram processing centre for the area.
Farmers of Vikarabad, Kodangal and Parigi are cultivating maize in 28,250 hectares and getting 84,750 metric tonnes of produce. Maize storage and processing unit were proposed for the area.
