Hyderabad: The Durgam Cheruvu Cable Bridge, one of the biggest cable bridges being constructed with modern technology, is one of a kind in the country. The cable bridge works are being taken up on a war- footing with a cost of up to Rs 184 crores. According to GHMC, all the bridge works are to be performed at a height of 20 metres above the ground level. The construction of the bridge now needs saddles (tailor-made system) for upper pylon works that varies from 5 to 7 mts.
For this erection, the GHMC will need to work only on Saturday nights or Sundays, as it needs to keep the high-capacity crane on road, which would block commuters going from NCC office toward Inorbit Mall.The movement of equipment needs to be taken up between 11 pm and 6 am. Though the concrete is ready in the day shift, segment casting is mostly done at nights due to restriction in transit mixer movement.
Traffic restrictions are directly hampering the concreting activity, and subsequently the launching works. Pouring of concrete can be performed only on weekends, which is resulting in delay of subsequent activities, according to the GHMC.So far, the parallel activities have been completed. The project work now mainly comprises pre-cast segment erection, which has to be performed with a predecessor activity only. Pre-cast segments are to be transported only between 12 am to 4 am, the GHMC said in a statement.
This is impacting works. The project location lies in hilly terrain, thereby requiring tremendous levelling of profile. The bridge is the third largest in the world and the longest in span in India. The earlier two bridges were completed in 5 to 6 years duration. The exposed surface of the bridge is in fish-belly curved unlike in the case of regular segment, and it is also leading to reduction in productivity, the GHMC said.
