Hyderabad: "Social media is robbing people of their original version. Excessive indulgence in social media platforms including WhatsApp and Facebook is consuming users' sense of thinking and robbing them of their original self,” said an US-based psychiatrist Dr Khutb M Uddin, who was an advisor to renowned personalities including legendary boxer late Mohammed Ali among others. He hails from the city.

Interacting with the media at Media Plus Auditorium on Monday evening, Dr Khutb Uddin who is also the President of American Federation of Muslims of India (AFMI) said "Information Technology has boosted global progress but has left behind social values, ethics and affection." He said that our bodies are enslaved to pleasures and comforts while minds are entangled and perplexed. “Thousands of youngsters are lost in depression every year, and many are enchanted by the bewitching charm of the modernising world, glittering presentation of social media and fast transforming cultures. The west may be progressing but its social and psychological problems are affecting teens, adults and aged alike," he noted

"India too is not isolated. The embrace of westernization and modern technology in India is fast growing and with it are evils like depression, social isolation and drug addiction. To overcome these, one must self-regulate the use social media, socialise with family and friends in person and practice spirituality," he cautions. Dr Khutb Uddin is currently overlooking AFMI's projects on upliftment through education and economic assistance in Bihar, Assam, Odisha and other Indian States. He said AFMI is formulating projects that can plug into Telangana social and economic situation soon.
