Dana Kishore calls for huge facelift to slums

Hyderabad: GHMC Commissioner M Dana Kishore said on Wednesday that the corporation was focussing on development of slums to enhance the standard of living of residents as well as the outlook of slims themselves, so that they can live with dignity in very clean and green environment. As the part of Swachh Survekshan 2019, he held a review meeting with all the Additional, Zonal, Deputy Commissioners, AMOHs and other senior officials of GHMC at the corporation head office.

While interacting with the officials the Commissioner said that beautification of slums should be taken up on priority and steps also taken to control the menace of open urination. Along main roads near slums, paintings on the walls should be taken up and officials also should take speedy measures to remove all garbage points in the slum areas. It has been observed in the city that most of the people clean their vehicles in the early hours and the water is let out on the main roads, thereby causing a lot of damage to the roads. Officials should rein in this activity.

Around Rs 250 crore is spent on damaged roads. Around 400 million gallons of the water are being supplied to the citizens out of which 10% of the same is being wasted. Thus, precious amount of water is also lost. People responsible for releasing water on the roads, those throwing C&D waste, and those who using below 50microns plastic materials are mainly responsible for shabby look of the city and must be imposed fines, said the Commissioner.

It has also been observed that most of the hotel owners are releasing water and sewerage materials on the main roads and even throwing the waste materials in the nalas. As a result, nalas are overflowing causing much inconvenience to the citizens, noted the Commissioner. The hotels which are producing more garbage, waste water etc., must provide their compost units and utilise the garbage to produce good manure. The Commissioner has directed the officials that in every circle at least 500 cases be booked by imposing heavy fines. He sought beautification of transfer stations with proper fencing and duly planting of medicinal plants in and around the transfer stations. Drawing attention to the menace of open urination, he stressed on creation of public toilets for the convenience of citizens.

Swachh Survekshan teams will be touring in the GHMC limits from January 4 to 31 and the team officials will be asking randomly selected citizens 7 questions for which awareness campaigns have to be taken up to educate them on Swachh Survekshan drive by GHMC, so they can give proper answers to enhance the image of the city. The Commissioner further stated that officials must strictly implement rules on use of plastic below 50 microns and if necessary action should to be initiated against violaters. He also appealed citizens to prohibit use of flower bouquets, plastic covers etc.
