Tarnaka: Findings related to environmental engineering, algae business, value addition and agriculture bio-technology, bio-energy, enzyme engineering were shared on the third day on Saturday of the on-going BioSD-2018 international conference at CSIR- Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) here.
Interesting findings in the domains of metabolic engineering of micro-organisms for production of value added chemicals and bio-fuels such as bio-ethanol, bio-hydrogen, bio-methane and butanol from food, vegetable and cellulosic wastes were primary discussed. Perspective of food waste and food leachate treatment for bio-gas production was explicitly discussed by Prof. S H Kim from South Korea. Scientist from ICT, Mumbai, deliberated on synthetic flavour enhancers which are esters in nature such as benzyl acetate, fatty acid methyl esters, acrylates, furfural acetate esters etc that find their application in food industries and confectionaries.
Experts in algal biology substantiated through their findings that micro-algae and other algal species play an important role in carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration, agriculture and aqua culture, artificial nutrients and hydro-charby utilising solid wastes. The session also showcased agricultural bio-technology which is also one of the thematic areas of sustainable development. Scientists from ICRISAT best utilised translational genomics and developed climate smart and high-yielding pulse crops. Other studies showed plant microbe interactions and nutritional importance of horticulture plants and leather processing, which also attracted the attention of audience.
