Telangana is No. 1 in India in power consumption: CMD

Hyderabad: The Telangana state secured the first place in the country in power consumption and per capita power consumption which are known as development indexes.

The central electricity authority has announced the details of the progress of various states in power sector for the year 2017-18. As per this data Telangana state by achieving highest growth rate in two divisions stand first in the country. By recording 13.62% annual growth rate in power consumption which is not there in any other state, Telangana stands first in the country. This achievement is 122.91% more than a country’s average growth rate. Uttar Pradesh state which has more population than Telangana could register 11.92% growth rate to secure second position after Telangana with 7.43% growth rate Andhra Pradesh is in third place. With 7.40% growth rate Maharashtra state secured fourth place. In 2016-17 in Telangana state the power consumption was 53,017 million units. In 2017-18 with 13.62 growth rate the power consumption was 60,237 million units. At the same time it is to be noticed that the country’s average growth rate is a meagre 6.11%.

While in 2016-17 the country wide consumption stood at 11,35,334 million units in 2017-18 the consumption was 12,04,697 million units.

Prior to formation of Telangana in 2014 the united Andhra Pradesh power consumption annual growth rate was just 6%.

11.34% growth rate in per capita power consumption

Telangana state by registering 11.34% growth rate in per capita power consumption secured the first place in the country. In 2016-17 the per capita power consumption in the state was 1551 units. In 2017-18 it was 1727 units. At the same time in the same period the nationwide power consumption growth rate was just 2.4%.

The per capita power consumption throughout the country in 2016-17 was 1122 units and in 2017-18 it was 1149 units. Among the states where the per capita power consumption is more than 1000 units, Andhra Pradesh stands next to Telangana in per capita power consumption. The state wise growth rates are: Andhra Pradesh 5.23%, Maharashtra 4.8%, Himachal Pradesh 3.9% and Madhya Pradesh 3.13%.

After formation of Telangana state the per capita power consumption has grown to 59.32%. In 2013-14 it was 1084 units and by 2017-18 it reached to 1727 units.

Telangana state could achieve this due to round the clock 24 hour free power supply to agriculture as well as 24 hour round the clock uninterrupted and quality power supply to every sector. The power consumption has increased substantially in commercial and industrial sectors due to quality power supply without any power cuts. Industries have been working in three shifts. Due to all these the power consumption in Telangana has grown substantially unlike in other states. The growth in power consumption is viewed all over the world as a development index.

11.94% growth is a maximum demand

The Telangana state has registered substantial growth rate in the maximum power demand (Peak) in 2016-17 this was 9,187 MWs where as in 1017-18 it reached 10,284 MWs with 11.94% growth. During the same time the country wide average growth rate has been just 2.43%. Telangana state thus secured 391% more growth rate than the Nations average.

In 2016-17 the Nationwide peak demand was 1,56,934 MWs and in 2017-18 it reached to 1,60,752 MWs.

Agriculture sector power connection increased by 51.37%

Telangana state has achieved considerable progress in sanctioning connections for agriculture pump sets. Prior to formation of Telangana there were regulations for sanctioning agriculture pump set connections which has been done away after the formation of the state. Due to this in four years after formation of Telangana 4.28 lakhs of agriculture pump set connections were sanctioned. While the aggregate pump set connections from 2010 to 2014 were only 2,82,875 from 2014-18 (in four Years) the aggregate agriculture pump set connections were 4,28,208.

During the united Andhra Pradesh in Telangana area in 2010-11 70,283 pump set connections, in 2011-12 78,210 connections, in 2012-13 71,717 connections, in 2013-14 62,665 connections were sanctioned. After formation of Telangana in 2014-15 94,070, in 2015-16 93,299 connections, in 2016-17 1,17,277 connections, in 2017-18 82,934 connections and in 2018-19 as on date 40,628 connections were sanctioned. Prior to formation of Telangana during the last four years, per year 70,000 pump sets were sanctioned. Whereas, after formation during the first four years on an average per year 97,000 connections were sanctioned.

Telangana state GENCO and TRANSCO CMD Devulapally Prabhakar Rao has said that the achievements of power consumption, per capita power consumption and the peak demand signify the development index of Telangana state. He has expressed his happiness over the details on power consumption and power situation announced by Central Electricity Authority for 2017-18. He said that it is a proud moment for the whole of Telangana and its people. He said that there is a continuous relationship between development and power consumption. He said that development will be more where there is higher power consumption as well as power consumption will be more where there is development.

The CMD said that while, during 2017-18 the growth rate in power consumption was 13.64% during the same period in Telangana the GSDP growth rate was 14.1%. Due to improvement in power supply the production and productivity increased in agriculture and industrial sectors as well as registering considerable progress in service sector.

CMD said that during 2018-19 the prospects of achieving more growth rate than 2017-18 are considerably high. The CMD reminded that due to round the clock 24 hour power supply to agriculture sector since 1st January 2018. The highest peak demand registered is 10,818 MWs he said that the peak demand may surpass an estimated 11,000 MWs during Rabi season. During the coming days, said the CMD that, due to the lift irrigation projects there will be enormous power requirement resulting in more power consumption and per capita power consumption in Telangana state. He said that notwithstanding with the power demand whatever it might be efforts will be made to meet the demand. The CMD said that along with 24 hours round the clock free power supply to agriculture sector more and more agriculture pump set connections are being given which shows the importance and priority to the welfare of the people.
