Major issues in Cantt

One of the biggest issues plaguing the Secunderabad Cantonment is the closure of half-a-dozen roads in the Cantonment. Although a few roads were reopened recently based on the Defence Minister’s instructions, people still live in fear as the Local Military Authority (LMA) closed the roads for four days for Independence Day celebrations.

Any party that assures people to reopen all the roads would find favour. Several Resident Welfare Associations in the north eastern parts of the cantonment have been vociferous on the issue. Open Secunderabad cantonment All Roads (OSCAR) an active group has been raising the issue of road closure. Chandrashekar, spokesman of OSCAR says, “The residents have been using the roads in the cantonment for decades. It is just an infringement on the fundamental rights of people. What is irksome is, in spite of directions from the Ministry of Defence, there are still some roads that are out of bounds.”
