Hyderabad: With the prevalence of sentiment among the political parties that Mahakutami (Grand Alliance) may not bring luck, the Congress is proposing to name the new alliance as Praja Kutami (People’s Alliance).

The Congress leaders would put this proposal before the other leaders of the front as soon as the alliance is officially formed. The new name would be announced at the time of the declaration of the alliance. Several Congress leaders are strongly opining that Mahakutami may not bring luck to the alliance as happened in the elections of 2009.

Telugu Desam, Telangana Rashtra Samiti and other parties have formed a grand alliance in 2009 against the Congress and named it as Mahakutami. But the alliance failed to achieve the success as the Congress won the election on its own.

There are several reasons for the victory of the Congress in that elections like charisma of former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, presence of Praja Rajyam party in the fray and better prospects for the Congress all over the country.

The Mahakutami being led by N Chandrababu Naidu and K Chandrasekhara Rao has fought well against the Congress but fell short of expectations. The charisma of Naidu and KCR did not help the Mahakutami.

In order to fight the TRS in the forthcoming elections, the Congress has revived an alliance of opposition parties which is being described as Mahakutami. It has brought the Telugu Desam, Telangana Jana Samithi and Communist Party of India into the front. As there was opposition to use of the name Mahakutami, it was brought to the notice of the PCC working president Ponnam Prabhakar. He readily agreed to it and said that instead of calling it Mahakutami, it would be better to name it Praja Kutami.

A senior leader of the party said that the Mahakutami was coined by the media and the alliance partners have not proposed it. The leader said that since the alliance is yet to be announced officially Congress and its partners are unable to restrict the media from using the name Mahakutami. The talks on the alliance are stuck at the common minimum programme and finalisation of seat sharing. The alliance partners are keen to strike a deal this week and would declare the alliance soon. Hopefully, on the name of the new amalgamation too.
