Warangal/Mahabubabad: In a bid to promote eco-friendly celebration of Vinayaka Chaturthi, the town-based social service organisation Sulakshya Seva Samithi distributed clay Ganesh idols to the public in Hanamkonda.

At a programme held at Srinagar colony on Sunday, noted writer G Girija Manohar Babu distributed the idols free of cost on behalf of the Samithi. Speaking on the occasion, he called upon the public to install clay idols both at homes and pandals.

We need to keep the spirit of the festival intact but we shouldn't damage the nature's eco system by erecting idols made of plaster of paris (PoP) and chemical colours. Youth should carry forward our rich heritage and culture but in an eco-friendly manner,” he said.

Manohar Babu lauded Sulakshya Seva Samithi for their initiative of reviving age-old tradition of installing eco-friendly clay Ganesh idols which, he said was the need of the hour.

The Samithi founder president Santhosh Manduva said they were distributing the clay idols for the last three years as part of their objective of environmental protection. Awareness among the citizens has also been created on the harms being caused to the environment by PoP idols.

Samithi members Revanth Mandala, Prasad, Thirumal, the colony residents Chandra Prakash, Veeraiah, clay idol maker Rajender, Ganesh Utsava Committe members were present.
