Hyderabad: In a heart-rending incident, two school students died, and several others sustained injuries when the roof of a shed that passes off as a classroom collapsed at New Century School at Vivekanandanagar in Kukatpally here on Thursday.

The mishap took place at 3.50 pm when the children were taking Karate classes. The children who died were identified as Mani Keerthana and Chandana. They gave up the battle for life while undergoing treatment at a hospital while the condition of others is causing concern. One of them, Naresh, was shifted to Apollo Hospital after his condition deteriorated.

Parents and students allege that the school management had built the shed with poor quality material which resulted in the tragedy. The rain which lashed out Kukatpally on Wednesday rendered the foundation weak, with the result that the beam that held the roof got dislocated and crashed into the children.

Irate students and locals went on rampage in the school, breaking mirrors and breaking furniture. A few angry students shattered the window panes of the school buses parked nearby.

Madhapur DCP A Venkateshwara Rao visited the spot and said that a case had been filed against the school management. "We will take stringent action against them," he said.

Kukatpally MLA Madhavaram Krishna Rao visited the spot and expressed anguish over the incident. He confronted the education department officials for not checking the quality of construction. “If you are not sincere in your duty, mishaps of this nature will continue to happen," he slammed them.

He demanded stringent action against the school management. Meanwhile, municipal authorities sealed the school. While this was so, students’ union leaders staged a dharna outside the school, demanding action against the management.

They demanded payment of ex-gratia to the victims’ parents and those of the injured children. The management did not issue any statement about the mishap. The staff of the school fled soon after the incident, fearing for their lives.
