Hanamkonda: In a bid to make Warangal accident-free zone, the Traffic Police on Tuesday organised a meeting, christened as Atmeeya Samavesham, with the auto-rickshaw drivers of the tri-cities of Warangal-Hanamkonda-Kazipet.
Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner of Police V Ravinder said that development of any region depends upon the law and order situation. Traffic regulation is one among many issues the cities were facing at the moment, he added.
“The need of the hour is to focus on regulating the vehicular traffic that is growing boundlessly by each passing day. To make the city accident-free zone, all the vehicle, public and private owned, have to follow traffic rules,” Ravinder said.
There are more than 25,000 auto-rickshaws and their drivers need to be patient in following traffic rules, he said. Referring to the death of 432 persons in road accidents last year, he said majority of the fatalities were due to drunken driving and over-speeding.
This is where we need to focus on, he said, appealing to drivers to follow some restraint while driving. He said that as many as 93 persons died and 502 injured in road accidents involving auto-rickshaws in last three years. In last six months, the police were able to bring down the number of accidents, he said.
The auto drivers took oath to follow traffic rules, on the occasion. The police felicitated auto drivers Sambaiah, Taj Baba and Narsingam for their honesty in returning valuables accidentally left behind by commuters. The police also felicitated Ramesh, Rammurthy and Venkateshwarlu, who haven’t paid any penalties for infringing traffic rules. RTA K Venu, DCP Muralidhar were among others present.
