Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is chalking out plans to lay paver blocks on either side of the road in order to accommodate utility wires underneath the blocks to end road cutting and digging. This method had been implemented by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) which turned out to be successful.
According to GHMC official, the civic body had been spending Rs 100 crore annually in order to take up the road repairs. The corporation had been spending more than 40 per cent towards road restoration which had been dug up to lay pipelines, internet cables and other utility wires.
A senior GHMC official told The Hans India that the civic body had spent Rs 78 crore on roads which were damaged due to the recent rainfall. He said the GHMC spend more than Rs 30 crore to restore roads which were damaged due to road cutting and digging. He said even though the GHMC asked the agencies to restore the roads after the completion of works, several contractors have been turning a blind eye.
The GHMC official said that in order to put an end to road cutting in the city, the corporation is contemplating to lay paver blocks on either side of the road which will accommodate all utilities beneath them. He said paver blocks are cheaper when compared to bitumen and white top roads. He said the paver blocks can be easily removed and restored after completion of the work. He said that since the GHMC had embarked on major infrastructure projects like Strategic Road Development Plan and others, paver blocks method would be the best solution.
