Hyderabad: The Osmania University is making grand plans for centenary celebrations with an estimated spending of about Rs 500 crore.
The university administration proposes to establish 4MW solar power plants, a sewerage treatment plant, a new library building, eight hostel buildings, new centenary academic blocks, and a centenary convention centre on the campus as part of the centenary celebrations.
The university is mulling to generate grants from various sources like Union and State governments, OU alumni association, etc.
By establishing solar power plants, the university wants to become self-sufficient in meeting its power requirements and curtail the power bills which run into crores of rupees every year.
Besides, the campus would have a Centre for Telangana Studies which would look into issues like cultural studies, economic studies, social studies, and historical studies. The centre would collect and analyse information from all districts in the State. It would also take up surveys on issues such as labour migration, prices of essential commodities, etc.
The university administration also wants to establish a skill development centre. Every year, more than one lakh students graduate from various faculties in the State.
“This centre will identify skills that are required by industry and the same will be imparted to the students so that they are employable,” said Prof S Ramchandram, Vice-Chancellor, after inaugurating the centenary celebrations office on the campus on Monday.
The university also wants to establish one innovation and incubation centre and solid waste management on the campus.
For the successful conduct of the celebrations, the administration has formed several committees like OU Centenary Celebrations Committee, Reception Committee, Organising Committee, Finance Committee, Face-lift Committee, Hospitality Committee, Press and Media Committee among others.
For the centenary fete, the OU administration is planning to release one song and a logo. The OU officials said that a video would be made highlighting various elements of the university and role of the university in developing the Telangana State and the country. Soon, the university would launch a web portal also on the centenary celebrations.
The university has planned to conduct international and national conferences, lectures by Nobel laureates and eminent academicians, inter-state sports meets, inter-state student competitions, cultural festival and science exhibitions on the campus.
The inaugural function would be conducted for three days starting on April 26, 2017. “The celebrations will be held in a befitting way,” Prof Ramachandram said.
