Pete Lau, OnePlus CEO told at Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona have cast doubt over the wireless charging for the next OnePlus flagship phone. Lau called wireless charging “far inferior” when compared to his company’s wired Warp Charge and the tone of the interview, this was actually enough to conclude that the feature will definitely not be there on the OnePlus 7.
Lau expressed that OnePlus won’t include wireless charging until it can be made as prompt as the company’s wired charging, but followers of the brand were hoping to hear a different tune in the buildup to the company’s first release of 2019.
When asked the company to confirm or deny the reported absence of wireless charging from its next flagship. There was implicit confirmation received: OnePlus repeat its belief that the speed of Warp Charge is superior, noted that wireless charging adds thickness to a device, and also stressed that it could have adopted wireless charging a long time ago, had its performance been satisfactory. It’s all an effort to provide the best customer experience, but strongly believe that today’s customer expects wireless charging for the best experience.
In flagship Android phones wireless charging has become a checkbox feature. Xiaomi’s Mi 9 has the fastest wireless charging in the market just announced before MWC and a price of $450 that is less than OnePlus’ initial price.
For Samsung and LG the Korean duo, wireless charging has been a mainstay for ages. LG doesn’t even bother highlighting it and takes it for granted; whereas Samsung has moved on to reverse with the new Galaxy S10, similar to wireless charging to power things like the company’s Galaxy Buds. By the time the OnePlus 7 is launched, wireless charging will definitely be an expectation rather than a hope.
