Cuddalore: A team of revenue, labour, police and social welfare officials led by Cuddalore sub-collector K M Sarayu assisted by the Foundation of Sustainable Development (FSD), an NGO, rescued 32 bonded labourers.
Labourers including 10 women and 11 children working in the sugarcane fields were rescued on Tuesday I;e 18-Sept-2018. The members are of 8 different families from Agaram village in the district.
FSD Executive Director K Krishnan said an agent identified as Sejar, who had recruited this 32 bonded labourers and forced them to work in different sugarcane fields and he was booked under several sections of the Bonded Labourers System Abolishing Act, 1976 and Child Labourers System Abolishing act,1976.
The NGO also insisted on registering a complaint on Sugarcane field owners. Krishnan said a bonded labourer, “who was rescued from a brick kiln unit at Erode a couple of months ago said several families who left their villages did not return back after 8 years”
