New Delhi:
Completing the Modi-Shah take-over of the Bharatiya Janata Party, veterans Atal Bihari Vajpayee, L K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi have been eased out of the party’s parliamentary board and Central Election Committee in the revamped party hierarchy.

Vajpayee, the first NDA prime minister has been ailing for a long time, and his presence was just nominal, but both Advani and Joshi are still active in the public domain as members of the Lok Sabha. But both of them had openly resisted Modi’s rise as the party’s prime ministerial candidate last year, and seemed to have paid the price for this defiance. Technically, Modi has used the norm of excluding persons above the age of 75 from his cabinet and key party positions to ease these veterans out. The gainers are three-term Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, union minister for social justice Thawar Chand Gehlot ( also from MP) and J P Nadda a senior general secretary whose name was also doing the rounds for the party chief’s post. In a gesture of token regard for these ousted leaders, the party has set up a six-member Margadarshak Mandal, with Vajpayee, Modi, Advani, Joshi and Rajnath Singh as members.

These changes in the central election committee, and the parliamentary board are on the expected lines and do not have any surprises. The reconstituted parliamentary board now consists of Amit Shah ( president), prime minister Narendra Modi, union ministers Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj, M Venkaiah Naidu, Nitin Gadkari, Ananth Kumar, Thawar Chand Gehlot, Shivraj Singh Chauhan, J P Nadda and Ramlal (both general secretaries).

Similarly, the revamped central election committee has all these members and also includes three others-Shahnawaz Hussain, Jual Oraon, and the chief of women’s wing Vijaya Rahatkar.
