Pakistan Has No Place in Prez’s Address on Foreign Policy. President Pranab Mukherjee said that Modi government would work to develop strategic and cooperative partnership with China. Significantly, the President’s address does not mention Pakistan by name.
- ‘By engaging with China and US economic growth will be on fast-track’

- Need to revitalize SAARC for regional united voice on global issues
New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee said that Modi government would work to develop strategic and cooperative partnership with China. Significantly, the President’s address does not mention Pakistan by name, even while asserting that the government would not shy away from raising issues of concern at bilateral level. “We emphasise that the future of shared prosperity can only be built on the foundation of stability in the region, which requires sensitivity to security concerns and an end to export of terrorism to neighbours,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set his sights on China which is an emerging global power with the twin objectives of giving a boost to the economy and to cosy up to the US. By engaging with China, the government wants to fast-track its economic growth, besides producing results which may not be possible by engaging with Pakistan as there is a deadlock over the issue of cross-border terrorism.
In his address to the joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament, The President chose to focus on initiatives with Japan, especially in the field of building modern infrastructure in the country. He recognised Russia as a privileged and strategic partner with a promise to build further on the firm foundations of this relationship. The President noted that a unique and bold signal was sent out to the South Asia Region and the world by inviting for the first time in Independent India, leaders of all South Asian neighbours. He said India would work with the South Asian leaders to revitalize SAARC as an effective instrument for regional cooperation and as a united voice on global issues. With the US, the Modi govt would intensify engagements in the fields of trade, science & technology besides strengthening strategic partnership. It is therefore, no surprise that the Prime Minister has already committed to visit the US for a summit-level meet with US President Barack Obama in September.
