The Beas tragedy at Himachal that cost the lives of young students from the City shook the Country. While the parents are distraught looking for their little ones with a fading ray of hope and the rescue operation is still underway, very few survivors made it from the unforeseen disaster as the dam gates were opened while the youngsters were still near the river. While nobody is to be blamed in particular for the mishap, the testimony from those survived states that the students were busy clicking themselves against the beautiful backdrop unaware of the oncoming danger. This leaves us with a simple question – Has the selfie and social media fixation started controlling the lives to an irrevocable extent?
Though it is totally unfair to blame the little kids who just wanted to take back fond memories home, there is no denying the fact that getting overtly clicked by a camera has become an obsession of sorts with the present generation – selfies, usies, groupies…everything is now captured and shared on the personal social networking sites. People are so lost living an alternate live on the internet that there is no clear differentiation to exiting in reality.
