A committee at the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, has observed that reservation of seats in the MBBS course for Scheduled Caste (SC) category students under the NRI quota was a national policy matter and the institute could not take a decision.
Principal of the institute Dr Atul Sachdev chaired the committee. The meeting of the committee was attended by professor in charge academics Dr Harsh Mohan, medical superintendent Dr AK Janmeja, Dr CS Gautam, head pharmacology, Dr Sudhir Garg, head, orthopaedics, and the assistant registrar and the law officer. Dr Sachdev confirmed that the committee did meet. Sources said that the reservation beyond 15% for scheduled caste categories pertained to the national policy on reservation and the committee was unanimous in deciding that reservation of seats more than the 15% ceiling cannot be taken by the college.
On the directions from the UT administration, the GMCH had decided to review the controversial decision of reserving one MBBS seat for Scheduled Caste (SC) category students under the NRI quota. The decision was taken on an order by UT home secretary Anil Kumar.
On June 19, the home secretary passed the controversial order of reserving a seat for NRISC candidate. HT in its report on June 26 ‘GMCH ‘reserves’ MBBS seat on home secy’s order’ had highlighted that in a case of favouritism, the GMCH director issued a corrigendum on the orders of the home secretary, reserving one NRI seat for a candidate belonging to the SC category. The order added if an NRI seat remained vacant, then it would be reverted to SC-UT candidate, instead of going to an NRI candidate.
