Ganesh Chaturthi: Be the change you wish to see

Our environment is facing serious threats and is crumbling under the waste left behind by us after the festivals are over. One of the major examples of this is the Ganeshotsav. While we celebrate the festival with much joy and reverence, we forget that we have a duty towards our environment too. Huge amount of waste is left behind after the Plaster Of Paris (POP) Ganesh idols fail to dissolve in the sea, lakes and ponds. Because of POP's artificial nature and the artificial colours and chemicals used to make the idols, millions of marine life wither and die, while the water bodies are left to stagnate.

With Ganesh chaturthi coming up, on one side we see Ganesh idols lined up in many areas and people competing about whose idol is taller and on the other side are the environmentalist and a few people who are considerate enough to use eco-friendly Ganesh idols. As the number of people using ecofriendly Ganesha idols made from clay is hiking up every year, so is the usage of plaster of Paris (POP) idols.

When people are holding campaigns against POP idols and trying to create an awareness, Arvind Mule of Saidabad had made an idol of 7 feet using gunny bags and twine thread without any outside help whatsoever. This student of JNAFAU had taken the most effective way of making a change in the society- BEING THE CHANGE.
